Henri Milan

Baux de Provence, Provence, France

St. Rémy de Provence, France “Inspiration is infinite....it is in everything we do, every encounter we have.” - Henri Milan Domaine Henri Milan was established by Robert Milan in 1955 and is located near Avignon in St Rémy de Provence. During this period, most vignerons sold their grapes to large cooperatives; prices were determined by the market. In 1973, rather than sell his grapes at a loss, Robert decided to construct his own cave in order to vinify his wines himself. In 1986, Henri inherited the estate with the ambitious goal of refocusing the family vineyards towards sustainable agriculture, believing the best wines in the world are created with reverence to the environment. He immediately converted his vineyard’s diverse soils in the Aphilles mountain range to organic farming. More recently, he has embraced biodynamic viticulture and vinification practices, viewing these processes as a way to improve his wines and quality of life. He looked to Claude Bourguignon and Claude Courtois, celebrated champions of natural and biodynamic wines, as role models for this endeavor. An art enthusiast, perhaps inspired by Van Gogh’s depictions of St. Rémy de Provence, Henri commissions a different artist to design the label of the Clos Milan each vintage. This exceptional cuvée of old-vine Grenache and Syrah comes from his vineyard’s sloping yellow sandstone and gravel; it maintains a similar structure to that of Château Rayas. Today, Henri is regarded as one of the top vignerons in the region and has significantly elevated the quality of the wines of his formerly sleepy village. His wines now fall under the Baux de Provence appellation, established in 1995.
